PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Recent economical growth and a boom in the tourism industry persuaded the State of Qatar to invest in a new international airport that can also accommodate the next generation of Airbus A380 type aircraft. This new airport will have two runways partially constructed on reclaimed land; its location is 4 km east of the existing airport.

The State of Qatar, through the New Doha International Airport Steering Committee, awarded the contract for the reclamation of the 1,700 hectare platform on December 1st 2004.

The massive project requires full completion in just 24 months. As such, a high capacity of large dredging vessels is required. The JV, sponsored and led by Middle East Dredging Company, estimates the deployment of around 14 dredging vessels; 5 sea going cutter dredgers and 9 medium to large jumbo trailer suction hopper dredgers.

The assignment covers the borrowing of sand at sea and the reclamation of 62 million m3 of sand, the construction of 18.5 km of outer revetments to protect the airport from wave action, the dredging and creation on an ornamental lagoon within the platform inclusive of 3.5 km of revetment works and the construction of an extensive drainage system.
